Sydhavnen, Copenhagen: A Neighbourhood Guide
Sydhavnen — "the South Harbour" — is not the Copenhagen you see on postcards. There are no colourful townhouses or tourist-packed squares. Instead, there are repurposed industrial buildings, quiet harbour walks, a growing creative community, and a neighbourhood that feels like it is still figuring itself out. That is exactly what makes it interesting.
Where it is
Sydhavnen sits southwest of the city centre, between Vesterbro and Valby. It is easily reachable by bike (15 minutes from the centre) or by bus. The closest S-train station is Sjælør. The neighbourhood stretches along the harbour, with a mix of older social housing, new apartment buildings, and leftover industrial infrastructure.
The harbour and waterfront
The harbour is Sydhavnen's best feature. Wide, quiet, and underdeveloped compared to the rest of Copenhagen's waterfront. There are spots for harbour swimming, kayaking, and long walks. The light in the evening — particularly in summer — is beautiful. If you are coming for a sauna session at Turban Sauna, arrive early and walk along the water first.
Urban Camp
Right next to Turban Sauna, Urban Camp is a combined camping ground, café, and event space. You can rent a tent or a cabin for the night, grab a coffee during the day, or attend one of their occasional events. It is one of the few places in Copenhagen where you can camp within the city.
Food and drink
Sydhavnen is not a dining destination (yet), but there are some solid options:
- —Café Sydhavnen — a neighbourhood café with simple, good food and a local crowd
- —Bådklubben — a harbour-side spot with drinks and a summer-only outdoor vibe
- —Numerous kebab and pizza spots along Sydhavnsgade for quick, affordable bites
What to do
- —Walk or bike along the harbour promenade
- —Swim in the harbour at the public bathing areas
- —Visit Turban Sauna for an evening saunagus session
- —Explore the street art and murals on industrial buildings
- —Rent a kayak and see the neighbourhood from the water
- —Visit during one of the neighbourhood's occasional flea markets or community events
The vibe
Sydhavnen is real Copenhagen. Not polished, not curated, not trying to sell you anything. It is a place where people actually live, with all the rough edges and quiet moments that come with that. If you are looking for something authentic, and you do not mind a neighbourhood that is still growing into itself, it is worth the trip.
Turban Sauna is located at Vasbygade 18 in Sydhavnen. Three evening sessions daily. 149 DKK per person. Book online at turbansauna.dk.
