Sauna and bathing traditions around the world
Hot air, steam and warm water can create very different bathing experiences. Here are a few traditions that show how the setting, customs and pace can vary.
Finland: sauna and löyly
Water poured over hot stones creates löyly: the steam and heat at the heart of the Finnish sauna experience. Sauna culture includes everyday visits, family traditions and time shared with others.
Guided aufguss: heat and movement
In a guided aufguss, a sauna host works with heat, scent and towel movements. Contemporary show formats can also include music, choreography and storytelling. Different formats create different atmospheres.
Türkiye: the hamam
A Turkish hamam centres on steam, heated marble and washing. A visit can include a scrub with a kese mitt and a foam wash or massage. It is a bathing tradition with a long social history.
Japan: onsen
Onsen are geothermal hot-spring baths. The experience centres on soaking in warm water, with washing before entering the shared bath and attention to bathing etiquette.
Our approach at TURBAN
Our format is guided saunagus, with breaks between rounds. We make room for attention, choice and care within that shared rhythm.

These examples offer a starting point rather than a full picture. Customs vary between places, communities and individual practitioners, so it is worth checking the local rules before you visit.
