Sauna Etiquette in Denmark: What You Need to Know
Denmark's public sauna scene is growing fast, but for newcomers — whether Danish or visiting — the unwritten rules can feel unclear. This is a straightforward guide to sauna etiquette in Denmark, based on how things actually work at most public saunas in Copenhagen and beyond.
Swimwear: yes or no?
It depends on the venue. In Finland and Germany, nudity is the norm. In Denmark, it varies. Most public saunas in Copenhagen require swimwear. Some gender-separated facilities (like Helgoland) may allow nudity. When in doubt, bring swimwear. At Turban Sauna, swimwear is required.
Always sit on a towel
This is universal. Always place a towel between yourself and the wooden bench. No bare skin on the wood. It is both a hygiene thing and a comfort thing — those benches get hot.
Be quiet (or at least, be considerate)
Danish sauna culture leans quiet. Light conversation is fine, but keep the volume down. During a saunagus session, silence is generally expected while the gusmaster is working — it is part of the experience. Between rounds, chatting is welcome.
Do not pour water on the stones yourself
At a guided session, the gusmaster controls the steam. Pouring your own water disrupts the temperature and the experience for everyone. At self-service saunas, go easy — a small ladle at a time, and check that others are comfortable before adding more.
Respect the cold plunge
If there is a shared cold plunge pool, rinse off before getting in. Do not stay in for an excessively long time if others are waiting. And no jumping or splashing — it is not a swimming pool.
Arrive on time
If you are attending a scheduled session (like saunagus), arriving 10 minutes early is recommended. Once the session starts, the door closes. Latecomers disrupt the experience for the group. At self-service saunas, timing is more flexible.
Phones stay in the locker
No phones in the sauna. No photos. No exceptions. This is a space to disconnect. Most venues have lockers for your belongings.
Hydrate
Drink water before, during (between rounds), and after your session. Avoid alcohol before or during sauna use. It impairs your body's ability to regulate temperature and increases the risk of dehydration and dizziness.
Leave the space better than you found it
Hang up your towels. Put away any borrowed items. If you used a cold shower, leave it as you found it. Small things that make a difference for the next person.
