Sauna og Isbad: How the Heat-Cold-Rest Cycle Works

saunaguscold plungewellnessscience

Every saunagus session follows the same rhythm: heat, cold, rest. It is not random. The three-phase cycle is rooted in Scandinavian bathing tradition and supported by a growing body of research on thermal contrast therapy. Here is what happens in each phase and why the cycle works.

Phase 1: Heat (sauna, 12–15 minutes)

During the heat phase, your core body temperature rises. Blood vessels near the skin dilate (vasodilation), increasing blood flow. Your heart rate increases to levels comparable to moderate exercise. The gusmaster adds essential oils to the steam, creating an aromatic environment that engages your respiratory system.

Physiologically, the heat triggers endorphin release and activates heat shock proteins — cellular repair mechanisms that protect against stress. Your muscles relax. Tension dissolves. By the end of 12 to 15 minutes, you are deeply warmed.

Phase 2: Cold (plunge or shower, 30 seconds to 2 minutes)

The transition from heat to cold is the defining moment. When you enter the cold plunge, your blood vessels constrict rapidly (vasoconstriction). Your heart rate spikes briefly. Norepinephrine floods your system — the same neurotransmitter linked to focus, alertness, and mood elevation.

Research published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology found that cold water immersion at 14°C increased norepinephrine by 530%. This is why people describe feeling intensely alive after the cold plunge. It is not placebo — it is neurochemistry.

You do not need to stay in long. Thirty seconds is enough for beginners. The effect is immediate.

Phase 3: Rest (outdoor recovery, 5–10 minutes)

The rest phase is where integration happens. Your heart rate normalises. Your blood vessels recalibrate. The contrast between the extreme states — hot and cold — creates a parasympathetic nervous system response: deep calm, slowed breathing, a sense of relaxation that is difficult to achieve through other means.

This is why outdoor rest areas matter. Fresh air, sky, stillness. At Turban Sauna, the outdoor space is designed for exactly this — a place to sit, breathe, and let the cycle do its work before the next round.

Why three rounds?

The first round is adjustment. Your body is learning the rhythm. The second round is where most people find their flow — the heat feels deeper, the cold feels sharper, the rest feels more complete. The third round is the culmination. Experienced sauna-goers often describe this as meditative. Your body knows what is coming. You surrender to the process.

The cycle at Turban Sauna

Every 75-minute session at Turban Sauna follows this heat-cold-rest format with three rounds. The cold plunge pool is maintained at a bracing temperature. The outdoor rest area has seating and fresh air. A certified gusmaster guides the temperature, the essential oil infusions, and the pace of each round.
